Action on Health Care Affordability Is a Top Priority for Coloradans

New poll reveals strong support for a public option plan and prescription drug affordability board

Denver, Colorado - A recent poll conducted by Strategies 360 for the State Innovation Exchange (SiX) shows that voters in Colorado strongly support progressive solutions to make health care more affordable and put more money in the pockets of working people. Nearly three-quarters of Colorado voters (74%) favor setting limits on how much drug companies can charge for some of the most expensive prescription drugs; additionally, creating a public health insurance option earns majority support (58%) with 24% more in favor than opposed.

“These numbers illustrate what I have been hearing in one-on-one conversation in my district—Colorado supports the legislature taking steps to lower the cost of health care because the status quo isn't working,” said Senator Kerry Donovan, whose district is in the Western Slope.

The skyrocketing cost of health care and prescription drugs remains a top issue for Colorado residents. The findings highlight that progressive policy solutions like limiting hospital profit margins, increasing competition in the health care market, and capping prescription drug costs would make a real difference for Colorado families. “As a pharmacist, there is not a week that goes by that I do not hear from a patient who is struggling to pay for their medications. Some are having to choose between their lifesaving prescription drugs and putting food on the table,” said Representative Sonya Jaquez Lewis.

Survey Methodology: Strategies 360 conducted a survey of 600 registered voters in Colorado from January 2-5, 2020. Interviews were conducted on landlines and cell phones. The margin of error for a survey of 600 interviews is ±4.0% at the 95% confidence level; error is higher among subgroups.
