“At today’s Senate HELP Committee hearing, anti-abortion politicians and activists recycled fearmongering claims that collapse under decades of rigorous science and real-world medical practice. It was a wash, rinse, and repeat of the same tired talking points and junk science they have pushed for years.
Here is the truth: medication abortion is safe, effective, and essential.
Substituting ideology for evidence does nothing to protect patients. It only threatens access to critical, time-sensitive care. Senate leaders should not be using their platform to amplify dangerous misinformation in service of an agenda that voters across the country have repeatedly and decisively rejected.
This hearing is political performance art designed to push misleading rhetoric to appease anti-abortion extremists. But the threat to medication abortion and to reproductive freedom nationwide is very real and already unfolding in the states. Anti-abortion politicians are working overtime this state legislative session to restrict and ban abortion, even in states where voters have acted to protect access.
What happens in Washington, D.C. matters, but we cannot take our eyes off the states, where these same politicians are advancing laws they hope to elevate to the federal level. This is a coordinated effort to undermine access to essential medication like mifepristone through every possible avenue.
In state legislatures nationwide, we must continue to advocate boldly and unapologetically for policies that protect our communities and strengthen health and well-being, not restrictions that tie the hands of doctors and intimidate patients, their families, and loved ones.
