Economic Justice Initiative (New 2026)

Economic Justice Initiative

SiX's Economic Justice Initiative team organizes and equips state legislators in-and-across all 50 states towards building economies that empower workers, consumers, and local businesses. Our mission is grounded in the belief that our government and economy can work for, with, and by all people—not just wealth-hoarding, tax-dodging billionaires and corporate monopolists. We believe that fair wages, healthcare, housing, education, childcare, and retirement are basic human rights, and that a healthy economy should deliver these guarantees, and ensure we all have a fair shot. Worker power, tax justice, and affordability are the core pillars of our work. We advance our goals through customized policy support, peer-to-peer legislator learning, cross-state organizing, education and training, research, communications, and convenings.

We also know that policy-making is only as effective as our power-building. If we want to win, we must organize inside and outside of state capitols, in and across all states, working in collaboration with grassroots partners. State legislators, in collaboration with workers, consumers, and local businesses, can build a new economy that achieves our shared goals.

Worker power

From fair wages and benefits to collective bargaining agreements and general strikes, unions provide a vehicle for everyday people to wield immense economic and democratic power. Our team is here to help legislators fight back and build pro-worker economies in the states. That includes strengthening unions, raising wages, and funding the essential programs working families depend on — as well as organizing legislators in collaboration with workers on the picket line and towards cross-sector solidarity. Authoritarian regimes have often sought to crush worker organizing efforts and weaken unions in order to further enrich themselves by tilting the balance of power toward elites. True to form, the Trump administration has attempted to divide and conquer labor organizers and has rolled out a series of policies that hollow out protections for workers across the country.

Tax Justice

America’s tax systems are purposely regressive — historically rooted in white segregationist efforts to codify economic systems that unfairly advantage them and disadvantage Black working families. And with the passage of the “One Big Billionaire Tax Break” act, the Trump administration initiated the largest transfer of wealth from working families to the billionaire class, redistributing funds upwards and leaving states with unfathomable budget shortfalls impacting food security and care programs that working families depend on. Public opinion is on our side and, in this funding crisis, there is an opportunity for state legislators to advance tax policy to end wealth-hoarding and fund the things working families depend on, and deserve– like healthcare, housing, and good jobs. Our team is here to drive tax policy reform — from helping new legislators understand the fundamentals of state tax systems, to organizing cross-state campaigns, to providing individual technical assistance that dives deep into the policy weeds. We also make sure legislators are working in collaboration with state advocates advancing tax systems change. From wealth and corporate taxes, stopping corporate tax giveaways, navigating property tax and income tax rollbacks, and state response to budget attacks from the federal government, our team is here to help legislators champion a fair tax system that ends the billionaire and corporate tax-dodging and wealth-hoarding driving the affordability crisis.

Affordability

We recognize that poverty and the extreme concentration of wealth did not happen by accident — they are a product of deliberate policy choices over decades, making life increasingly expensive for everyday people. State legislators wield tremendous power in this crisis: they control trillions in state budgets, oversee hundreds of agencies, and design the systems that govern our economies and deliver public services. SiX’s affordability agenda centers anti-monopoly reform, tax systems, and consumer protections to stop price-gouging and build truly competitive markets that lower prices and increase competition. From banning junk fees and noncompete agreements, to stopping AI price-gouging and secret deals, to raising wages and expanding access to essential public services like childcare, healthcare and retirement, our team is here to make America affordable for all.

States offer an opportunity to prove another way is possible: an economy that serves the public good, not corporate profits; and measures success by the well-being of its workers rather than the number of wealth-hoarding tax-dodging billionaires residing in the state. Join our growing network of legislators committed to making this economic vision a reality.
