States Step Up to Keep Families Fed: Statement on Federal SNAP Cuts by SiX’s Senior Vice President of Programs and Georgia State Senator Kim Jackson

On Saturday, November 1, SNAP benefits will be cut off due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, leaving 42 million Americans without necessary food assistance.

“By withholding SNAP benefits, the federal government is once again failing millions of Americans and forcing states to pick up the pieces. SNAP is one of the most effective economic and anti-hunger programs in our country, helping families put food on the table while strengthening local economies. Building on that success, many states have expanded access through programs like Double Up Food Bucks, which stretch SNAP dollars and support local farmers. But with benefits expiring, the administration’s refusal to release emergency funds, and no end to the federal shutdown in sight, families are being left without the food assistance they need to survive, and states are once again left to clean up a crisis they didn’t create.”
